The Reckoning In Court

Prosecutor: State your full name for the record, please.

Elena: Elena Grace Montgomery.

Three months later, the downtown federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Reporters, corporate executives, and curious citizens filled every wooden bench. Julian sat at the defense table wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed to a chain around his waist. Victoria sat beside him, wearing a plain gray prison uniform, her hair unstyled and dull without her expensive salon treatments.

Prosecutor: Miss Montgomery, please describe what happened on the night of October 14th at the Vance estate.

Elena: Victoria Vance confronted me in the ballroom, slapped me across the face, and accused me of trying to ruin her family. Julian then grabbed my neck and threatened my family's estate if I spoke out about the stolen funds.

Defense Lawyer: Objection, Your Honor! My client was under extreme emotional distress due to corporate restructuring!

Judge: Overruled. The witness will continue.

Elena: I activated my phone recording, which alerted the federal agents who were already investigating their offshore transfers. They caught Julian and Victoria red-handed with the forged documents.

Prosecutor: And what was the total amount of money they attempted to steal from your trust fund?

Elena: Fourteen million dollars.

The courtroom broke into quiet gasps, the judge banging his wooden gavel twice to restore order.

Judge: Silence in the court!

Prosecutor: We now enter into evidence the complete audio recording from Miss Montgomery's phone, along with the forensic audit of Vance Capital.

The prosecutor pressed play on a small laptop sitting on his table. Julian’s low, threatening voice echoed through the high-ceilinged courtroom, clear as day.

Julian's Recorded Voice: Keep your mouth shut if you know what is good for your father's estate. You think you can walk away from this engagement with half my mother's trust fund?

Julian lowered his head onto the defense table, unable to look at the jury as his own words betrayed him in front of the judge.

Prosecutor: The prosecution rests, Your Honor.

The judge looked over his glasses at Julian and Victoria, his expression stern and unforgiving.

Judge: Julian Vance, for the charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, corporate forgery, and felony assault, I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison without the possibility of early parole.

Julian: Fifteen years? No! Your Honor, please! I was just following my mother's instructions!

Judge: Evelyn Vance, for organizing a multi-million dollar fraud scheme and illegal embezzlement, I sentence you to twenty years in federal prison.

Victoria: Twenty years?! I will die in prison! Please, have mercy!

Judge: You showed no mercy to an innocent young woman whose inheritance you tried to steal. Court is adjourned.

The judge slammed his heavy gavel down, signaling the final end of the trial. Federal marshals stepped forward immediately, pulling Julian and Victoria up from their chairs to lead them away through the side doors.

Julian: Elena! Look at me! Tell them to reduce the sentence! I am sorry!

Elena didn't turn around. She stood tall, adjusting her navy blue coat, and walked out of the courtroom beside her father, who was now fully recovered and standing proudly at her side.
