Cornered At The Estate

Victoria: Get those cameras out of my face! I will sue every single one of you!

Reporter: Mrs. Vance! Is it true you embezzled millions from the Montgomery trust?

Julian: No comment! Get out of the way!

Reporter 2: Julian! What happens to Vance Capital now that the federal government froze your assets?

The officers pushed Julian and Victoria into the back of a black armored van, slamming the heavy doors shut. The loud click of the lock echoed down the driveway as the vehicle pulled away into the California night.

Inside the ballroom, the music had stopped, but the room was filled with excited chatter. Mr. Sterling handed Elena a bottle of sparkling water.

Mr. Sterling: Are you holding up okay, Elena? That slap looked painful.

Elena: My cheek stings, but my heart feels lighter than it has in years.

Mr. Sterling: Your father called from the hospital. He watched the news broadcast from his room.

Elena: Is he okay? How is his blood pressure?

Mr. Sterling: He was smiling, my dear. He said he has never been prouder of his daughter.

Elena wiped a single tear from her eye, a soft smile touching her lips for the first time all evening.

Elena: I need to go see him right now.

Mr. Sterling: The car is waiting at the side entrance. But there is one more thing you need to sign before we leave.

Mr. Sterling opened his briefcase, pulling out a single sheet of heavy white paper bearing the seal of the state court.

Elena: What is this?

Mr. Sterling: It is the official petition to seize the Vance estate to cover the damages they caused to your family firm.

Elena: This mansion?

Mr. Sterling: The mansion, the land, and all their luxury vehicles. Victoria signed the property over as collateral for a loan she took from your father three years ago.

Elena: She forgot about that clause, didn't she?

Mr. Sterling: She assumed your father would never enforce it. She underestimated how carefully he kept his records.

Elena took the silver pen from Mr. Sterling's hand, placing her signature cleanly at the bottom of the document.

Elena: Convert this entire estate into an educational trust fund for underprivileged students.

Mr. Sterling: An educational trust?

Elena: Victoria loved using this house to flaunt her stolen wealth. Now it will be used to give young people a real future.

Mr. Sterling: That is a wonderful decision, Elena.

They walked out of the ballroom together, passing by the shattered glass table where Victoria's tiara still lay on the marble floor. Outside, the night air was cool and crisp, clear under the California stars.
