The Diamond On The Stage

Mark: Put the bag down, Claire.

Claire: Mark, did you see what she did? She stole my grandmother's heirloom right before we walked down the aisle!

Elena: Mark, I swear on my life, I didn't put that in my bag! I don't even know how it got there!

Claire: Shut up, Elena! The evidence is right in my hand! Everyone saw me pull it out!

Mark: I said put the bag down.

Claire paused, her smug smile fading for a quick second as she looked at Mark's reaction. He wasn't yelling at Elena. He wasn't angry at the maid of honor at all. Instead, he stood tall, his hands resting naturally at his sides as he turned toward the large digital screen mounted on the marble wall behind the altar.

Claire: Mark, why are you acting like this? She's a thief! We need to call the police and have her arrested immediately!

Mark: Everything's on camera.

Claire: What are you talking about?

Mark: The entire venue's security system was upgraded yesterday for the wedding safety protocol. They installed four extra high-definition cameras near the bridal prep corner and the altar.

Claire's face suddenly drained of color. Her eyes widened in quiet panic as Mark pointed the small remote at the wall-mounted screen. The display flickered once, then switched from the wedding logo to a sharp black-and-white camera feed dated just twenty minutes earlier.

Elena: Mark... what is that?

Mark: Just watch the screen, Elena.

The video played smoothly in front of the two hundred guests. On the screen, Claire was seen standing near the back curtain while Elena was busy helping the flower girl fix her dress. Claire carefully opened her own jewelry box, took out the heavy diamond necklace, and slipped it straight into Elena's open handbag sitting on the vanity chair. She zipped the bag back up, looked around to make sure nobody was watching, and walked back to her position.

Guest 1: Look at that on the monitor! She planted it herself!

Guest 2: Oh my goodness, she framed her own maid of honor!

Claire: That... that video is fake! Someone edited that! Mark, you have to believe me!

Mark: The timestamp is live, Claire. It came directly from the security office downstairs.

Elena: Claire... why? Why would you do that to me?

Claire: I... I didn't mean to... It was just a joke! We were just teasing her!

Mark took two slow steps toward Claire. His face shifted from calm composure to deep, burning anger. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles in his neck stood out. He looked at the woman he was supposed to marry in just a few minutes, feeling complete betrayal in his heart.

Mark: A joke?

Claire: Yes! A prank! You know how we always mess around!

A second loud, heavy crack echoed across the stage. Mark raised his hand and slapped Claire hard across the face in front of the entire room. Claire stumbled backward, her head turning sharp as her hands flew up to cover her stinging cheek.

Mark: Why would you do this?!

Claire stood totally frozen on the altar, her wedding veil crooked, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation as the crowd behind her broke into loud, angry murmurs.
