"My Mommy Gave It to Me"

The Pearl With the Family Crest banner

"Can you tell me where this came from?" Julian asked gently, keeping his voice as soft and unthreatening as he could manage despite the mounting urgency he felt building beneath his composed exterior.

The girl looked down at the pearl still resting in his open palm, her small shoulders shaking now with the effort of holding back a fuller wave of tears. "My mommy gave it to me," she said, her voice cracking. "It was part of her necklace. She said it was really old, that it belonged to her family a long time ago."

Julian's chest tightened. "Where is your mother now?"

The girl's face crumpled fully, tears spilling freely down her cheeks as she struggled to form the words. "She gave it to me before she went to heaven," she managed, her voice breaking into full, heaving sobs on the final word.

The ballroom around them had gone almost entirely silent now, the earlier string quartet melody faltering as musicians, guests, and staff alike turned to watch the scene unfolding at the edge of the dance floor. Julian remained crouched before the crying child, the engraved pearl still resting in his palm, his mind racing backward through fragments of family history he'd never fully examined — a half-sister his father rarely mentioned, a scandal buried decades ago involving a woman his father had once loved outside his marriage, a child Julian had always assumed was simply family legend rather than living reality.

He looked up at the crying girl's face more closely now — the shape of her eyes, the particular set of her jaw — details that, once noticed, seemed suddenly, undeniably familiar.
