Victoria's voice hadn't finished echoing through the ballroom before Julian reached the scene, taking in the tableau with rapid, confused assessment — the small girl on her knees, tears streaming down her face, scattered pearls catching light across the white marble floor around her, and his own fiancée standing over her with an expression of undisguised contempt.
"Only gold shines here," Victoria added, her voice carrying easily across the now-quieting ballroom, several nearby guests turning to observe the unfolding scene with a mixture of curiosity and discomfort. "Someone get security to remove her before she embarrasses this entire event further."
Julian crouched immediately beside the girl, ignoring Victoria's continued commentary entirely, his attention fully absorbed by the child's obvious distress. "Hey," he said gently, his voice pitched low and calm despite the chaos of the ballroom around them. "It's all right. Let me help you gather these."
The girl looked up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes, apparently startled that anyone in this glittering crowd of strangers would offer help rather than further scorn. She said nothing, simply continuing to reach for the scattered pearls with small, trembling fingers.
Julian began collecting the pearls alongside her, his tailored tuxedo sleeve brushing against the cold marble as he reached for each small bead. It was the fourth pearl he retrieved that made him go suddenly, completely still.
