The tension in the grand foyer was thick enough to cut with a knife. Victoria stared at her husband, her face twisted in a mixture of disbelief and growing panic. She knew Arthur wasn't bluffing. When he used that cold, corporate tone, he meant business.
Victoria: You would risk everything we built? For her? A girl who sweeps our floors?
Arthur: I risked the woman I loved twenty-five years ago because I was a coward, Victoria. I am not making the same mistake twice.
Arthur turned to Elena, his voice softening instantly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a linen handkerchief, gently handing it to her so she could wipe her tears.
Arthur: Elena, come with me to the study. We need to talk. We need to figure this out.
Elena: Sir... Mr. Davis... I don't understand any of this. My mom never told me you were rich. She never told me anything about a mansion or a family business.
Arthur: Because she wanted to protect you from the greed of this family. Come, let's sit down.
Arthur began to lead Elena away from the foyer, his arm placed protectively around her shoulders. Victoria watched them leave, her fists clenched so hard her large diamond rings dug into her skin. She grabbed her phone from her silver clutch, which was still lying on the table, and frantically dialed a number.
Victoria: Mother? We have a massive problem. Arthur found out about the girl. Yes, Clara's daughter. She is here, working as a maid. He knows everything. We need to stop this before he changes his will and inheritance structure!
Meanwhile, inside the quiet, wood-paneled study, Arthur poured a glass of water and handed it to Elena. She took it with shaking hands, sitting on the edge of a massive leather chair that felt far too luxurious for her simple clothes.
Arthur: Tell me about your life, Elena. How did you end up working here?
Elena: After my mother got sick, the medical bills were too high. We lost our small apartment. We had a massive mortgage we couldn't pay, and the bank threatened foreclosure. She passed away in the hospital, and I was left with nothing but debts.
Arthur closed his eyes, feeling a sharp pang of agony in his heart. While he was flying on a private jet and buying luxury cars, his own daughter was facing foreclosure and watching her mother die in poverty.
Elena: I found the photo in her old jewelry box after the funeral. On the back, it had an address written in old ink. It led me to this mansion. I didn't know who lived here, so I just applied for the open maid position so I could get inside and see who the address belonged to.
Arthur: Did your mother ever talk about a man named Arthur?
Elena: Only once, when she was very sick and confused from the medicine. She whispered that Arthur would save us. I thought she was talking about an angel or a saint. I never imagined it was the billionaire CEO of Davis Enterprises.
Arthur stood up and walked over to a large safe hidden behind a painting on the wall. He punched in the code, opened the heavy steel door, and pulled out an old, locked leather journal. He brought it over to the desk and opened it with a small key from his keychain.
Arthur: I want to show you something, Elena. Look at this.
He turned the journal toward her. Inside was the exact duplicate of the black-and-white portrait she had in her hand. But next to it, written in Arthur's own handwriting from decades ago, were the words: My forever, Clara.
Elena: You... you really did love her.
Arthur: With all my heart. But my father told me she took a million-dollar check to leave the country. I believed his lies. I thought she abandoned me for wealth.
Suddenly, the study door banged open. Victoria marched in, followed by two men in dark suits. Her expression was triumphant and cold.
Victoria: The conversation is over, Arthur. My legal team is here. And they brought some very interesting documents from your father's old private safe.
