A Slap Across the Ballroom

The evening had begun quietly enough, guests mingling comfortably beneath the Ashcombe ballroom's magnificent chandeliers, string quartet music drifting softly through the crowded room. Sofia Reyes had arrived earlier that evening dressed modestly in a simple blue gown, hoping to observe the gala from a comfortable distance without drawing unnecessary attention to herself.

She hadn't anticipated Margarethe Ashcombe noticing her at all, let alone approaching with such immediate, unmistakable hostility. Margarethe had spent months hearing rumors about a mysterious young woman connected somehow to her son's personal affairs, rumors she had dismissed entirely until tonight, when she finally recognized Sofia standing quietly near the edge of the dance floor.

"You have some nerve showing up here," Margarethe said sharply, crossing the ballroom floor with quick, purposeful strides that immediately drew the attention of nearby guests. Sofia turned, startled, her expression shifting rapidly from polite confusion into genuine alarm as she registered the fury radiating from the older woman approaching her.

"I'm sorry, I don't think we've met," Sofia said carefully, attempting to defuse whatever confrontation was clearly building rapidly between them. Her measured response did nothing to calm Margarethe's mounting anger, the older woman's hand moving swiftly before Sofia could react at all.

The slap echoed sharply across the ballroom, drawing immediate, collective gasps from the surrounding crowd of elegantly dressed guests. Sofia stumbled backward, her hand flying instinctively to her stinging cheek, shock and pain flooding her expression as she struggled to remain standing.
