Chapter 3: Poison in the Foundations

The room seemed to freeze around them as Mark maintained his iron grip on Clara’s jaw. The silence stretched thin, heavy with decades of unspoken resentments and buried secrets that had finally bubbled to the surface. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at the heavy leather bag Mark had dropped near the door. It was unzipped just enough to reveal a stack of thick, legal folders labeled with her deceased husband's estate seal—documents she had spent months attempting to destroy before Mark could ever find them.

"You thought I would never check the offshore accounts, didn't you?" Mark growled, his voice trembling with suppressed rage as his fingers loosened slightly on her skin. "You took everything my father left for Lily. You emptied her trust fund, lied to the lawyers, and blamed it on a bad market investment." Clara lowered her eyes, unable to meet his gaze as the weight of her exposed crime crushed any remaining pride she held.

Mark released her jaw abruptly, shoving her backward as he stood up to his full height. He walked over to the leather bag, snatched the folders from inside, and scattered the paper documents across the marble kitchen floor like fallen snow. Bank statements, forged signatures, and fraudulent transfer receipts landed face-up beside Clara, laying bare the calculated greed that had driven her to betray her own granddaughter's future.

"I did it to protect us!" Clara wept, clutching her bruised jaw as she scrambled across the floor to grab the papers. "Your father left us in massive debt, Mark! You don't understand the people he owed money to!" But her desperate excuses fell on deaf ears; Mark simply stepped over the papers, grabbed Lily softly in his arms, and pointed a trembling finger toward the open front door, cutting off her last chance at redemption.
