The grand ballroom fell completely silent as guests gathered around in a wide circle, stunned by the sight of the city's most powerful businesswoman weeping in front of a street child. Eleanor dropped to her knees right there on the crimson carpet, completely unbothered by the dust on the child's tattered dress staining her expensive emerald suit. She held the black-and-white photo with both hands, her fingers shaking so violently that the image blurred before her eyes.
The photo showed Eleanor at six years old standing beside her older sister, Clara, who had been adopted by a foreign family twenty years ago after their parents passed away. Eleanor had spent millions of dollars hiring private investigators across the country to track down any trace of Clara, but every lead had turned into a dead end. Now, standing in the middle of a luxury gala, a homeless child was claiming that the very same photo belonged to her sister.
"Where did you get this?" Eleanor wept, her voice thick with emotion as she reached out gently to touch the child's small, trembling shoulder. "Who gave this picture to you? Please, you have to tell me!" The young girl looked down at the photo, then up into Eleanor's tear-streaked face with a mix of fear and realization.
"My big sister, Clara..." the girl whimpered softly. "She kept it under her pillow in the old train yard shelter. She told me if anything ever happened to her, I had to find the lady in the green suit at this hotel and show her the picture." Eleanor let out a heartbroken sob, pulling the young child into a tight, warm embrace right in front of the entire high-society crowd.
