The gala had been proceeding smoothly through its early hours, three hundred guests circulating beneath the ballroom's enormous chandeliers, until Charlie, restless and bored by the adult conversation surrounding him, accidentally knocked over a side table holding an elaborate floral centerpiece near where his stepmother, Regina, stood entertaining a cluster of important donors.
Regina's reaction was immediate and disproportionate, her voice cutting sharply across the ballroom's polite murmur. "You little brat!" she snapped, shoving Charlie roughly aside as she surveyed the scattered flowers and broken vase with visible fury. "Look what you did! Do you have any idea how much that centerpiece cost?"
Charlie stumbled backward, tears springing immediately to his eyes, more from the shock of being shoved than any physical pain. Several nearby guests turned, watching with uncomfortable expressions but making no move to intervene in what was, evidently, not their business to correct.
Charlie didn't wait for further scolding. He turned and ran, small feet carrying him quickly through the crowd of formal guests, sobbing openly now, calling out the only plea that felt instinctive in his distress. "Mommy, mommy, help me!"
The cry drew confused glances from guests who knew Regina was his stepmother, not his mother — Charlie's actual mother having been, as far as anyone at this party understood, deceased for years. No one quite realized, in that moment, precisely who Charlie was running toward.
