Why Did You Push Me

Emily's shock at hitting the marble floor was almost immediately overtaken by anger, the sharp, protective fury of a pregnant woman who'd just been physically shoved without any warning or explanation. She twisted around, wincing at the ache already blooming along her hip, staring up at Rosa with an expression caught somewhere between confusion and betrayal. "Why did you push me?" she demanded, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and outrage, one hand instinctively moving to cover her stomach protectively. Rosa opened her mouth to explain, but before a single word could leave her lips, the answer arrived in the form of an earsplitting crash that shook the entire foyer. The massive crystal chandelier tore free from its mounting and plummeted straight down, exploding into thousands of glittering fragments precisely where Emily had been standing only seconds earlier. The sound was deafening, sharp and violent, echoing off the marble walls and staircases in overlapping waves. Emily's anger evaporated instantly, replaced by pure, breathless horror as she stared at the wreckage scattered across the exact spot she'd occupied moments before. Her breathing came in short, ragged gasps, her hands trembling as the full weight of what had almost happened finally settled over her. She could have died. Worse, her unborn child could have died, crushed beneath hundreds of pounds of iron and crystal in the span of a single careless morning. Rosa remained crouched beside her, breathing hard from the sprint, her own hands shaking slightly as the adrenaline of the moment began to fade into something closer to shock. Around them, staff members began pouring into the foyer, drawn by the tremendous crash, their expressions shifting rapidly from confusion into horror as they registered the destroyed chandelier and the pregnant woman sitting stunned on the floor beside it.
