The Maid Accused of a Crime She Didn't Commit

Hannah Reyes had worked in the Ashgrove Manor for almost two years, long enough to know the sound of trouble before it fully arrived. She heard it that evening in the sharp click of Margarethe Ashgrove's heels crossing the marble hallway, faster and angrier than usual, the kind of pace that meant someone was about to be blamed for something. Hannah just never expected that someone would be her.

The slap came without warning, Margarethe's palm cracking hard across Hannah's cheek before a single word of explanation was offered. Hannah stumbled backward, her hand flying to her stinging face as a small black velvet jewelry box tumbled from Margarethe's other hand, clattering loudly against the polished tile floor between them. Hannah sank to her knees instinctively, staring at the box in confusion, unsure what it had to do with her at all.

"You," Margarethe hissed, her voice trembling with fury, "stole my bracelet!" The accusation rang out through the hallway, sharp enough to draw the attention of nearly everyone within earshot. Hannah looked up at her employer with tears already streaming down her face, utter disbelief mixing with rising panic. She had never once, in two years of loyal service, taken so much as a spare button from this household.

Nearby, Edmund Ashgrove, the family's aging patriarch, watched the scene unfold with a grave, unreadable expression, his jaw tight with concern he hadn't yet voiced aloud. He had known Hannah since she first arrived at the manor, a quiet, hardworking young woman who had never given him a single reason for suspicion. Something about tonight's accusation didn't sit right with him, though he said nothing yet, choosing instead to watch carefully as the scene continued to unravel.

Hannah's trembling hands reached toward the fallen jewelry box, slowly lifting its lid open, revealing nothing but empty velvet lining inside. "I've never seen this before," she sobbed, shaking her head desperately, her voice cracking under the weight of fear and humiliation. Before anyone could respond, footsteps approached from the far end of the hallway, Nathaniel Ashgrove, the family's young master, striding forward with cold, deliberate purpose, adjusting the lapel of his grey three-piece suit. "Call the police immediately," he said flatly, his tone leaving no room for questions. Nobody in that hallway yet realized just how quickly his own composed authority was about to unravel.
