A Name Thirty Years Buried

The ballroom around them had gone increasingly quiet, nearby guests sensing that something significant, something far beyond ordinary party conversation, was unfolding in front of them. The string orchestra's melody continued, oblivious, somewhere in the background, providing an oddly gentle soundtrack to the older woman's visible unraveling.

"Marion," the woman repeated, barely audible, tears gathering rapidly in her eyes. "Marion Calder was your mother?"

Sofia nodded, increasingly alarmed by the woman's reaction, searching her face for some explanation. "Yes. Did you know her?"

The woman didn't answer directly. Instead, she reached out again, this time actually touching the pendant with trembling fingers, tracing the familiar carved pattern with the particular reverence of someone confirming a memory she'd carried, unresolved, for decades.

"This pendant belonged to my mother," she whispered, her voice breaking entirely now. "It was stolen from our family thirty years ago, the same year my younger sister disappeared without a trace. We searched for years. We never found her. We assumed—" Her voice caught, unable to finish the sentence.
