Come Inside

Winston studied her for a long moment, taking in her bare feet, her thin, weather-worn clothes, the careful, protective way she'd carried his son safely through the snow to find help. Whatever circumstances had brought Josie to his back fence tonight, in the middle of a snowstorm, without proper shoes or a coat, clearly extended far beyond a simple, isolated act of kindness.

"Josie," he said gently, rising back to his feet, careful to keep Theo securely wrapped and warm against his chest, "you found my son when I'd nearly given up hope of ever seeing him again. I'm not about to let you walk back out into this cold without knowing you're safe first."

He gestured toward the mansion's open doors, where Marguerite waited, her expression already softening with maternal concern as she took in Josie's bare feet and thin clothing.

"Come inside," Winston said, his voice carrying warmth despite the exhaustion and overwhelming emotion of the last several minutes. Marguerite moved forward immediately, wrapping a warm arm around Josie's thin shoulders and ushering her gently through the mansion's grand double doors, the heavy wood creaking open into golden light and warmth beyond.

Winston followed behind them, Theo held securely against his chest, stepping through his own front doors for the first time in three months carrying something other than grief — carrying, instead, the improbable, overwhelming beginning of a family reunited by a barefoot stranger's quiet, extraordinary kindness.
