"I'm Done With You"

The Envelope He Tore in Half banner

The torn halves of the envelope fell to the marble floor between them, venue confirmations and deposit receipts scattering uselessly across the polished stone. Vivian stared down at the wreckage of their wedding plans, her face draining of color as the reality of what had just happened settled fully over her.

Nathaniel held her gaze steadily, Emma's small, exhausted breathing evening out gradually against his shoulder as the adrenaline of the last twenty minutes finally began to ebb. When he spoke again, his voice had lost its earlier volume, dropping instead into something low and absolutely final.

"I spent a year telling myself you'd grow to love her the way I hoped," he said quietly. "I made excuses for every cold comment, every excluded moment, every time she came to me in tears after being alone with you. I told myself I was imagining things because I wanted this to work so badly."

Vivian said nothing, her earlier composure entirely gone now, replaced by something closer to dawning panic as she watched the future she'd been quietly counting on dissolve in real time.

"But you just told a seven-year-old, my seven-year-old, that I don't love her anymore," Nathaniel continued, his voice hardening further. "And you locked her outside in the cold to make that point. There is no version of this relationship that survives that."

He shifted Emma more securely against him, already turning toward the hallway, done offering Vivian any further explanation or opportunity to argue her way back into his patience.

"I'm done with you," he said, the words final and unshakeable, carrying none of the earlier fury but all of its underlying certainty. "Pack your things. I want you gone before Emma wakes up from her nap tonight."

He walked away without waiting for a response, Emma's small hand curling into his shirt collar, her breathing steady and safe against him — leaving Vivian standing alone amid the torn remains of a wedding that would now never happen.
