A Phone on Marble

It had happened forty minutes earlier, while Marco was still shouting at her in the hallway and Vittoria had been distracted directing the staff to clear the ruined dinner service. Isabella had slipped her hand into her black quilted handbag, fingers finding her phone by memory alone, and made the single call she had rehearsed in her head a hundred times across eighteen months of small, accumulating injuries. She hadn't cried during the call. She had been almost eerily calm, reciting an address, a name, a set of facts she had spent months quietly gathering from ledgers she wasn't supposed to understand and conversations she wasn't supposed to overhear. Now, sitting at the marble table with the evidence of tonight still fresh on her face, she reached into her bag one final time and placed the phone down firmly beside her untouched salad, the sound of it against marble sharper than she expected in the room's sudden quiet. Vittoria's eyes went to the phone immediately, some old instinct sharpening behind her composed features. "What is that," she said. Not a question. A demand. "Insurance," Isabella said simply. Vittoria rose from her chair with the swift, absolute authority of a woman who had run this family for thirty years without ever once raising her own hand. "Snatch the phone from her!" she ordered one of the staff hovering near the doorway, her wide eyes betraying, for just a moment, something closer to fear than anger. But it was already too late for the phone to matter. The call had already been made, the address already given, and no amount of marble-table theater was going to undo the forty minutes that had already passed.
