A Scream Beneath the Chandeliers

The Butterfly Birthmark banner

The ceremony had proceeded exactly as planned through its opening moments — vows exchanged, rings presented, the officiant's voice carrying warmly through the hushed, chandelier-lit hall. Everly stood at the altar in her gown, one shoulder slightly bared where the fabric had shifted, the edge of her butterfly tattoo visible just above the neckline.

It was then that Diane Marsh, seated in the front row, rose abruptly from her chair, her face draining of color as her eyes fixed on something across the altar that had nothing to do with the ceremony itself.

Everly noticed the sudden movement a half-second before Diane's voice cut through the hall — not words at first, just a raw, wordless sound of distress that silenced the murmuring crowd instantly. Everly's own scream followed almost involuntarily, startled by the abruptness of it, by Diane's wide, horrified eyes locked directly onto her.

"Take it off," Diane said, her voice climbing rapidly toward hysteria as she moved toward the altar. "You're hiding something. Take it off, right now!"

Julian stepped forward instantly, positioning himself between his mother and his bride, his expression caught between confusion and urgent protectiveness. "Mom, stop! What is wrong with you?"

Diane didn't stop. She reached past her son, gripping Everly's arm with a strength that seemed to surprise even herself, her eyes fixed not on the tattoo but on something just beside it — the small crescent birthmark visible at the edge of Everly's collarbone.
