Watch Where You're Going

The Bride Who Found Her Sister in a Wet Photograph banner

The wedding reception had been unfolding smoothly for hours, guests mingling beneath the ballroom's massive crystal chandeliers, waitstaff moving efficiently between elegantly set tables. Mila had been assigned to the service corridor near the kitchen entrance, tasked with managing the flow of cleaning carts and supply deliveries throughout the busy evening, a job she performed quietly and diligently despite the exhausting hours.

She hadn't expected the sudden collision, a well-dressed guest rushing carelessly through the narrow service corridor, knocking directly into the cart Mila had been pushing toward the kitchen. Water sloshed violently from an overturned bucket, drenching Mila completely from head to toe within seconds, soaking through her black and white uniform entirely.

"Watch where you're going!" the woman snapped irritably, barely glancing back as she continued toward the reception hall, leaving Mila standing frozen and humiliated in the flooded corridor. Mila's hands trembled as she surveyed the damage, water dripping steadily from her hair, tears already welling in her eyes from the sheer exhaustion and humiliation of the moment.

She had grown accustomed to being invisible, to being blamed for accidents that weren't her fault, to absorbing the careless cruelty of wealthy guests who barely registered her existence beyond her uniform. Still, something about tonight's incident felt particularly crushing, perhaps because of how utterly alone she felt standing in that flooded hallway, water and tears streaming down her face in equal measure.

What Mila didn't notice, in her overwhelmed state, was the small, worn photograph slipping quietly from her soaked uniform pocket during the collision, falling unnoticed onto the ballroom's glossy black floor just beyond the service corridor's entrance.
