The tension on the pavement reached a boiling point as Miller yanked the wheelchair backward, forcing Sarah to gasp in sudden pain. "You think you can just wander around here pretending you own the place?" Miller barked, his voice carrying down the empty block. Sarah tried to reach for her purse to pull out her identification, but Miller slammed his hand down on her bag, pushing it out of her reach. He accused her of hiding illegal contraband beneath her oversized coat, using her obvious pregnancy as a wicked pretext to escalate the encounter. Sarah begged him to calm down, explaining that she was in delicate health and needed to reach her appointment down the street. Her heart pounded violently inside her chest as she felt a sharp kick from her baby, as if the child could sense the danger surrounding them. Miller paid no attention to her distress. Instead, he unclipped his baton from his belt, letting the heavy wood rest against the armrest of her wheelchair in an unmistakable display of intimidation.
Without warning, Miller grabbed the edge of the wheelchair and jerked it violently to the side. The sudden motion threw Sarah completely off balance. She cried out as the metal frame tipped over, slamming onto the cold asphalt. Sarah hit the ground hard on her side, using her arms to cushion her belly as she rolled away from the overturned chair. Her palms scraped against the rough gravel, burning with sharp pain, but her only focus was protecting her unborn child. She lay on the street, hyperventilating, looking up at the officer through a haze of shock and tears. Miller stood over her like a tyrant, showing no remorse for the injured woman at his feet. He stepped closer, pointing his finger directly at her face as she scrambled backward against the curb, completely defenseless against his towering presence.
"People like you don’t belong in this district," Miller sneered, tapping his heavy leather boot inches from her elbow. "You think having a big coat lets you mess around near my precinct? Show me what’s in that bag right now!" Sarah curled into a protective ball on the pavement, crying softly as she pleaded with him to call an ambulance or let her call her family. Miller raised his voice louder, drawing the attention of a few distant onlookers who began to pause on the far corner, shocked by the sight of an officer standing over a distressed pregnant woman on the ground. Yet, despite the growing audience, Miller felt entirely invincible beneath his official uniform, unaware that the reckless cruelty he was displaying was about to be witnessed by the most powerful authority in the entire city police department.
