A Face in the Crowd

Ethan moved through the ballroom with practiced ease, accepting congratulations from investors, exchanging brief pleasantries with board members, his attention only partially engaged with the surrounding conversation as his gaze drifted periodically across the glittering crowd. It was during one such distracted sweep that his eyes caught on a figure kneeling near the ballroom's far edge — an elderly woman in a plain cleaning uniform, carefully scrubbing at the marble floor, entirely unnoticed by the elegantly dressed guests moving past her.

Something about the set of her shoulders, the particular way she tilted her head as she worked, sent an unexpected jolt through Ethan's chest. He stared harder, disbelief building rapidly as details clicked into place with devastating clarity — the shape of her hands, the silver-streaked hair pulled back in a familiar, practical bun, features he'd know anywhere despite eight years and considerable physical change.

His champagne glass slipped from suddenly numb fingers, shattering unnoticed against the marble floor as a single word tore from his throat, raw and disbelieving.

"Mom!"
