A Question for Her Father

Eleanor stood motionless for a long moment, absorbing the sudden, overwhelming shift in the room's attention, the officer's salute still held with unwavering formality as murmurs of recognition continued rippling through the crowd around them. She felt the weight of two hundred pairs of eyes now regarding her not with pity or discomfort, but with something closer to the respect she'd earned and rarely received within these particular walls.

She turned slowly, deliberately, toward her father, who stood frozen near the bar, his earlier scowl replaced entirely by something closer to stunned, humiliated realization. Vivian remained beside him, equally frozen, her earlier cruelty now hanging awkwardly, publicly exposed in front of an audience that clearly understood, better than she had, exactly what Eleanor's scars actually represented.

"Are you sure you want me to leave, Father?" Eleanor asked, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts at composure, the question carrying far more weight than its simple words suggested. Because Vivian had spoken of removing her, of hiding her away, and Richard had said nothing to stop it — but the entire room now understood exactly what, and who, they'd be asking to leave.

Richard opened his mouth, then closed it again, apparently finding no adequate response to offer his daughter, his wife, or the assembled crowd of naval officers now watching him with expressions that had shifted, unmistakably, from polite deference into something considerably colder.

Eleanor didn't wait for his answer. She simply held her head high, the officer's salute still steady beside her, and let the silence of the room speak plainly enough on its own.
