"I never wanted you to find out like this."
Rachel looked at him in disbelief.
"You never wanted her to find out at all."
Chloe couldn't understand how the man she trusted had kept such a huge secret.
"You asked me to build a future with you," she said quietly.
"You met my family. You made promises."
Ethan closed his eyes.
"I made terrible choices."
Rachel wiped away her tears.
"I wasn't here to embarrass anyone."
She looked toward Chloe.
"I came because you deserved the truth before your life changed forever."
Several guests nodded quietly.
No one celebrated anymore.
The music had stopped.
The flowers and decorations suddenly felt meaningless.
Chloe carefully handed the phone back to Rachel.
"Thank you for telling me."
Rachel nodded sadly.
"I'm sorry you had to learn this today."
Chloe took off her engagement ring and looked at it for a long moment.
She placed it gently into Ethan's hand.
