Claire struggled to answer.
"It isn't what it looks like."
Michael stared at her.
"Then explain."
Claire lowered her eyes.
Tears began rolling down her face.
"I made a terrible decision," she whispered.
The guests couldn't believe what they had witnessed.
Lily quietly stepped back, suddenly overwhelmed by the attention.
Michael looked at her.
"You knew this would happen if you ruined the cake, didn't you?"
Lily nodded.
"I didn't know how else to stop everyone from eating it."
Michael knelt beside her.
"You were very brave."
Several guests thanked Lily for speaking up instead of staying silent.
One guest immediately called the authorities, while another carefully secured the remaining food so it could be examined.
The celebration ended, but everyone agreed that Lily's courage had protected countless people that afternoon.
Michael looked around at his friends and family.
"I almost ignored the person who was trying to help me."
He smiled gently at Lily.
"Thank you for doing the right thing."
Lily smiled through her tears.
"I just didn't want anyone to get hurt."
As the guests slowly left the party, they realized the day would never be remembered because of the ruined cake.
Instead, it would always be remembered because one brave little girl chose to speak up when everyone else believed something was simply an accident.
